It will depend upon the retailer. For example; at John Lewis you
can pay for shoes online with a gift voucher, but at Clarks you
cannot. The design of gift vouchers vary, and some retailers do
not a system in place to generate unique payment codes for each
voucher. John Lewis have however, on each gift voucher they have
a scratch-off panel which will reveal a security code with seven
characters underneath. Once the scratch-off panel has been removed
from a John Lewis voucher, it can only be used online (and not in-store),
to remove the possibility of the voucher being used twice.
