As you no doubt already know, the Converse All Star is a classic
American shoe - Converse were the pioneer of the ankle high sports
shoe (hi-top). Converse first began making sports shoes in 1908
- fifty years before Nike, and 40 years before Adidas. The All Star
basketball shoe/hi-top was released in 1917, and went on to become
the shoe that Converse are best known for. Up until 1970, Converse
had little in the way of competition - the All Star was the official
shoe of the NBA (National Basketball Association) and few manufacturers
ever attempted to challenge their monopoly. Nowadays the All Star
is rarely used in competitive Basketball matches, and is seen as
solely a fashion accessory.
